Kensho
is a 3 piece multi-media sculpture weighing approximately 100
pounds. The title is borrowed from Japanese and means "a momentary
glimpse of enlightenment." The two side pieces represent a churning
of cosmic energy, like gears or spokes of a wheel, and the center
represents the explosion of this energy outward and upward like
a third-eye orgasm. The top of the center piece is reminiscent
of a trishula, (or trident), prevalent in Buddhist and Hindu
iconography. The trishula is commonly said to represent various
trinities such as past-present-future, and creation-preservation-destruction.
Kensho
consists of two side pieces cast in crystal (46% lead glass)
and one center piece cast in permastone. The crystal pieces were
gold leafed on the back, which adds to their luminosity, and
all three pieces have brass coatings, acid-formed patinas and
gold leaf on the front. A custom pedestal was made for this sculpture
and is available for display and sale.
